R-Day celebrated

Republic DayShillong, January 27, 2013:   Meghalaya celebrated the 64th Republic Day with pomp and gaiety in all its district headquarters, civil sub-divisions and administrative units of the state. Despite the HNLC sponsored in the Khasi and Jaintia hills, the celebration went off without any hitch.

In the state capital Shillong, governor RS Mooshahary unfurled the Tricolour at Polo Grounds and took the salute at an impressive march-past by nine contingents of state police, Assam Regiment, BSF, CRPF, Home Guards, NCC boys and girls and Scouts and Guides.

Mooshahary distributed the Correctional Service Medal for Meritorious Service to Newland Thabah, head warden and Raj Kishor Singh, warden. Meritorious Service Medal winners included Alkat Liting, subedar of Border Wing Home Guards and Fredarick Mawrie, guardsman, Central Trainning Institute. The Police Medal for Meritorious Service were bagged by UB. sub-inspector Forward Syrti, havildar Prodenson Sangma and constable Timenson K. Marak of the 1st MLP Bn.

Government departments and NGOs presented colourful tableaux on the occasion.The first prize in tableaux presentation was bagged by the election department, second by the District Commerce and Industries Centre, Shillong and third by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). The animal husbandry and veterinary department received the consolation prize.

Other highlights of the day included cultural programmes presented by the Assam Regiment Centre, Arts and Culture department, Snap Paka and others.

Tura: Project director DRDA Ambrose Ch. Marak unfurled the Tricolour. Ten contingents from the state police, Home Guards and Scouts and Guides teams from different schools took part in the march-past Tableaux presentation, cultural programme, tug of war other and sports for children were held during the celebrations.

Marak later distributed prizes to winners of the tableaux presentation and cultural programme.

Jowai: Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills PS Dkhar unfurled the National Flag at Jrisalien playground. An impressive march-past was held by 20 contingents, including that of the Meghalaya Police and school students.

Other highlights included presentation of tableaux by different government departments, cultural programmes and sports and game.

Nongpoh: The celebration was held at the NSCA Mini Stadium Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh.. Akash Deep, deputy commissioner unfurled the National Flag and took the salute of an impressive march-past of 10 contingents, including police and students from different schools.  Other highlights of the day included sports and games for children and tug of war between the officers and teachers of the district.

Baghmara:  CT Gotmare, deputy commissioner, South Garo Hills unfurled the National Tri colour at the Government Higher Secondary School playground. Nirmal Gram Puraskar was also given to Onajora village and District Award was presented to the best Aganwadi workers. The celebration also included presentation of tableaux by three departments, sports and games for children, followed by the cultural programme.
