Rs 5 crore for skill dev

SHILLONG, NOV 12: Meghalaya government has decided to sanction five crores rupees for implementation of a ‘Skill Development Programme’ aimed at providing jobs to over 2000 educated unemployed youths across the state.

Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “The government is sanctioning five crores of rupees from the state plan for the implementation of the programme aimed at providing job opportunities to 2800 youths in the state.”

Lyngdoh informed that the state has signed MOUs with ten companies based in Guwahati, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi who will absorb youths who are trained in 47 different trades that suit their interests and skills.

These companies are Six Sigma Educom, Lachumiere, ETPL (India) Skills Development, Shillong, Orion Edutech Pvt Ltd Kolkata, IL&FS Education Technology Service Ltd, Noida, NYDA Nongkrem, Avenues Shillong, Gazelle Information Technology Pvt Ltd, Edubridge Learning Pvt Ltd Mumbai, HP Institute of Insurance Guwahati and Darpan, Guwahati.

Stating that the identified companies have been instructed to impart trainings at the block level in the state ensuring its reach to the grassroot level, Lyngdoh said, “The first batch would commence from January next year and complete the course by June.”

Among the trades that have been identified are hospitality, IT, Masonry etc, she said adding that educated unemployed youth would be imparted three to six months skill development training before they would be absorbed.

The state government is investing about Rs 20,000 to 25, 000 per trainee which include the fees for trainers and stipends; Lyngdoh said adding that class VIII students and above are eligible for enrollment.

One of the main points agreed with the companies was an assured placement after completion of the course training besides providing security and safety to the employed lot, Lyngdoh informed.

According to Lyngdoh, a State Skill Development Council (SSDC) has also been formed in line with the recommendation of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) headed by the country’s Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

“The programme is part of the commitment of the government to empower the youths to better employment opportunity,” Lyngdoh said while appealing to the youths to take advantage of the opportunities.

In Meghalaya, the NSDC projected total domestic supply of human resources for the next 10-years in Meghalaya is estimated to be 6.51 lakh as against the total demand of 2.49 lakh.- By Our Reporter
