RS polls: No rival to Wansuk

SHILLONG, JAN 28: Sitting Rajya Sabha MP Wansuk Syiem is likely to re-elected unopposed to the Upper House of parliament during the February 7 elections as the opposition parties like the United Democratic Party (UDP), NPP and others will not be contesting the lone Rajya Sabha seat from  the state.

Lack of number in the state assembly is one of the biggest reasons for not putting up candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls.

The UDP, the biggest opposition party in the preset house, has only eight legislators in the 60 members assembly, the NPP has only two the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has four legislators, two Independents and one legislator is from the Garo National Council (GNC).

Put together the opposition do not have the number.

But the ruling Congress has 29 legislators, including the Speaker, two NCP legislators, 11 Independents, and one legislator belonging to the North East Social Democratic Party (NESDP) supporting the Congress candidate.- By Our Reporter
