SHILLONG, JAN 28: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) dared chief minister Mukul Sangma to take them to court on the alleged politico-militant nexus remarks as it said that the allegation came from the militants and not the party.
UDP secretary Allan F Dkhar told reporters on Tuesday, “Let him drag us to court. The UDP and the NPP are not the ones who came out with statement but the revelation was made by a political secretary of the A’chik National Volunteers’ Council – Breakaway (ANVC.B) Ajaju Marak.”
Dkhar, however, said that the chronology of events in 2012 does supports the chief minister’s nexus with the militants. According to him, the state government had even rushed to forge peace with ANVC, few months before the last assembly elections.
Dkhar said that dialogues between the parties – Sangma and ANVC, resulted in the agreement of widening the scope of empowering the powers of the Autonomous District Council in the Garo Hills and enlarging the strength of the elected council members from 30 to 40 members.
“This some way is connected with the allegation,” Dkhar asserted.
Dkhar further alleged that there are other instances which support the chief minister’s nexus with the militants like the surrender of GNLA chairman Champion Sangma, which appears as nothing less than a stage- managed affair.”
Dkhar said, “The covert deal of the chief minister with the militant outfits finally snowballed into the disclosure of ANVC( B) political secretary Ajaju R. Marak of Sangma’s nexus with the militants.”
UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh said reiterated the party’s stand on the need to initiate investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the politician – militant nexus in the state.
“We will pressurize the centre to institute an independent inquiry because Mukul Sangma became the chief minister by default with the aid of the militants and the government should be dismissed forthwith,” Mawthoh thundered.
Mawthoh, who was part of the delegation of the North East Regional Parties Front (NERPF) that met President Pranab Mukherjee and union home minister Sushil Kumar Sambhajirao Shinde, said that the politico-militant nexus issue was raised by the front as it is a serious and gives a bad reflection not only to Meghalaya but the entire region.
In the memorandum submitted to the President the UDP had said, “To ensure transparency and an impartial probe, the accused chief minister should be sacked from office, until proven otherwise.”- By Our Reporter
