SC refuse to interfere

SHILLONG, AUG 25: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with the order passed by Meghalaya high court relating to the powers of headmen and declined to grant any interim relief to the petitioner Sordar Skhembor Khongjirem.

A two-member bench consisting of Justice Vikramajit Singh and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh however has issued notice to concerned parties which were made returnable within a period of four weeks. The case was represented by senior counsel Vijay Hansaria for the petitioner.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in its urgent session held on  August 20 had passed a bill ‘The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Appointment and Succession of Chiefs and Headmen) Rules, 2015’ to empower the headmen within the jurisdiction of the council.

Meanwhile sources informed that with regard to the high rise building, the Meghalaya high court has concluded the hearing on the issue and kept the judgment reserved.- By Our Reporter
