Security tighten as normalcy limps back

pravin-bakshiTURA, JUNE 22: Para-military forces including the BSF and the state police are keeping  a tight vigil over Tura and the surrounding areas within the district to ensure that peace prevails after the Friday mob frenzy where one life was lost and several vehicles were set on fire by angry mob after news of an attempt to rape of an eighteen years old girl spread like wildfire.

Though the situation in Tura and other parts of West Garo hills district appears to be limping back to normalcy, but deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi told this website that the situation is being monitored closely and the BSF and para-military forces have been requested to assist the state police in maintaining law and order in the district.

Bakshi informed that the Meghalaya additional director general of police YC Modi is camping in Tura and closely monitoring the situation. He said, “Updates are being sent to the home minister at regular interval.” He informed that so far the situation appears to be normal as he has not received any report of untoward incident from any part of his district.”

Bakshi informed he will adopt a wait and watch policy before deciding on the relaxation of curfew on Sunday. He said, “ I will wait till tomorrow morning and review the situation and accordingly decide for how many hours curfew should be relaxed.” Tomorrow being Sunday people will go to church and Bakshi said he will review the situation early in the morning and accordingly think of the time to from when curfew should be lifted to enable church goers to go to church.

Meanwhile the BSF besides helping in Tura town has also intensified patrolling along the border with Bangladesh in Mankachar, the inter-state boundary with Assam.

A release from the BSF said that the force is also providing all possible assistance like shelter, food, security and others to approximately 250 members of the minority community who have taken refuge in the BSF campuses at Prahari Nagar and Dhanakgiri at Tura and at the BSF outposts of Gasuapara and Kilapara.- By Our Reporter
