Security to Deborah Marak to be reviewed

Shillong, Nov 26: The home department has directed the acting Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Mehta to submit a detail reports on the A’chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) militants attack on former deputy chief minister and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak before deciding on whether to upgrade her security cover.

A high level home department official told this reporter, “The report is expected anytime now and as soon as we get the detail we will review the security cover of Ms Marak.” He, however, informed that the former deputy chief minister has already been provided with security so it is just a matter of upgrading it.

The official also informed that after receiving the report from the police headquarter the home department can take an overall view about the security scenario and accordingly take a decision on the need to deploy more security personnel especially during the election.

The official said that the home department is viewing the threat to Deborah Marak and also the disruption of the public function in Rongbinggre with “great seriousness” and the home department will take appropriate steps to see that the election process and the threat to the politicians and candidates from the militants is neutralized.

The official, however, said that the remote places might be a problem for even the security forces to neutralize the militants and stop them from “being a nuisance” during the election. But, he assured that all necessary steps will be taken to try and reach out to the last post. – By Our Reporter
