TURA, JAN 5: Shillong Cricket Association (SCA) won the inter-zonal under-23 cricket tournament with 73 runs hammering Tura District Cricket Association (TDCA) on Tuesday at Alotgre stadium.

The Shillong team won the toss and elected to bat. They managed to score 222 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in 40 overs. Chasing the target of 223, the Tura team managed to score 150 runs all out.

Swarjeet Roy scored 77 runs and Rajesh Tati scored 54 runs for the Shillong team, while Kilco Marak of Tura scored 39 runs.

The inter-zonal tournament was organised by Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) in collaboration with Tura District Cricket Association (TDCA).

West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi handed over the trophy to the winner in presence of honorary secretary of MCA Naba Bhattacharjee and TDCA president Dikki D. Shira.

Bakshi also handed over a scholarship cheque to an under-16 player from Garo hills Wilco Marak. MCA provides scholarship of Rs 6000 to promising cricket players from the state.

Speaking to media, Bhattacharjee said, “MCA is committed to develop the cricket ground at Tura”. He announced that MCA is in constant touch with BCCI for improving the cricket infrastructure in Meghalaya and is pursuing for construction of an indoor stadium at Tura and Shillong.

He informed that BCCI has been allocating funds for supporting cricket in the state. “We received 50 lakh in three installments for improvement of cricket in Meghalaya. We have been providing assistance to players by sending them to other states for exposure trips and helping them to horn their talents”, Bhattacharjee said.

He expressed confidence that Meghalaya would soon have a team for Ranji tournament. “MCA is will oversee building of infrastructure for cricket in the state. If players continue to play and improve their skills, we will have our team for the Ranji”.

He explained that as per the BCCI directive, the inter-zonal under-16, 19 and 23 tournaments were held in the state.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Bakshi congratulated both the teams. He boosted the morale of the teams by narrating the story of MS Dhoni, who despites many odds made it to the top in the cricketing world.-From Our Correspondent
