Shillong marches for women and child rights

DSC_0256SHILLONG, MARCH 07: Students and members of different NGOs took out a rally to create awareness on the need to eliminate violence and crimes against women and children here on Thursday.

Carrying placards with messages like “Together we can end violence against women and girls”, “Violence against women is an everyday reality, act now always and forever before it’s too late”, “Men: be real, stop hitting women; Women: be confident, be you”, the marchers walked from Jingkieng Nongthymmai to St Anthony’s playground.

The rally was organised by the Rotary Club of Orchid City, Shillong in collaboration with the North East Network (NEN) and ILEAD on eve of International women’s Day which is observed worldwide on March 8 every year. The theme for the rally was: “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls”.

Rotary president Varghese said spreading awareness and sensitizing people on the rights of the women was a necessity. “Crimes against women and children are destroying the society as a whole and it is the responsibility of everyone to fight this menace,” he said.

The organizations observed a week-long programme to commemorate the women’s day by organizing events like debate competition, community awareness campaign on legal provisions for women and slogan-writing competition for high school children.  (By Our Reporter)
