Shun violence: Rijiju to ultras

SHILLONG, DEC 19: Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju on Friday appealed to the insurgent groups to shun violence and join the mainstream even as he failed to divulged the gravity of the Islamic terror modules presence in the NE region.

“Those youths who are waging war against the state and the nation should realized that they are fighting against their own family, society and the state at large,” Rijiju said while making an appeal to the insurgent groups particularly in the Garo hills region of the state.

According to Rijiju the path of violence that some youths have taken will not only  affect Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh but also their your own people.

Rijiju attended a meeting with top officials of the state, the Assam, Rifles, BSF, ITBP, state police and IB during his two days visit on Friday. He spoke about how the misguided elements could be use as resources to rebrand the region and make the ‘Look East Policy’ fruitful as planned.

Rijiju also informed that extra focus is being given by the present union government to ensure all round development of the NE region.

On the ongoing talks with different rebel outfits, Rijijju was of the opinion that talks should not go well beyond a point because they can use the space to leverage and re-enforce themselves.

Rijiju, however, refrain from commenting on the existence of the Islamic terror modules in the NE region especially after the National Investigating Agency (NIA) busted the JMB leader and its network in Assam.

When asked on this, Rijiju simply said there were a couple of joint inter ministerial meetings that discussed the issue. He however said, “The strategies adopted towards this cannot be disclosed but yes there will be a chief ministers meeting to discuss on the issues.”

Rijiju admitted that the porous Indo-Bangladesh border is an issue as it is humanely difficult to fully check cross border movement. He praised the performance of the frontier guards and the ITBP that guards the treacherous Indo- Bangladesh border.

Stating that the centre commitment is to transform the seven sister states region in five years time, Rijiju informed that in the next five years the present NDA government will transform the economy and the other socio-cultural aspects of the region but felt this can only happen only if there is a conducive atmosphere.- By Our Reporter
