Shutdown peaceful, attendance normal

SHILLONG, MAY 8:  The state, central government offices and financial institutions shutdown called by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) from Thursday was peaceful even as all government offices and banks functioned normally.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang informed that no untoward incident has been reported from any parts of the district and nobody has been arrested.

The HNLC had given a four days shutdown call of all government offices and financial institution beginning from Thursday demanding immediate release of the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) president Lamphrangsngi Kharbani and four others attested by the police.

Even as security personnel were seen keeping vigil in all the important junctions of the city, flying squads were also doing their round to stop anyone from obstructing office goers to the offices.  

Offices in all the Khasi, Jaintia and Ri Bhoi districts reported normal attendance and offices functioned as usual.

Banks too were open except in Mawlai where the financial institutions located in the locality remained closed.

Meghalaya additional chief secretary KS Kropha told this website that attendance in government offices across the Khasi and Jaintia hills was normal.

Giving details, Kropha said in the evening that East Khasi hills district registered 75 percent attendance, West Khasi hills 90 percent, South West Khasi hills 87 percent, East Jaintia hills 80 percent, West Jaintia hills 81 percent and Ri Bhoi district 80 percent.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that attendance in his office is around 95 percent and the rest five percent remained absent because of health issue.

West Khasi hills deputy commissioner S Kharlyngdoh also said that the shutdown did not have any impact in his district as offices were functioning normally.- By Our Reporter
