SHILLONG, JAN 9: The Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Monday felt that the former KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla, who was re-elected as MDC on a UDP ticket from Nongkrem, is a “threat” to the indigenous community.

HSPDP leaders revealed that its decision to support the ruling People Democratic Forum (PDF) led by Congress suspended member PN Syiem in the KHADC was to ensure Shylla did not get a chance to lead the council.

“The main reason behind the support to the PDF is because the party does not want such people who are a threat to the indigenous community to head the district council,” HSPDP media cell in-charge Londoner Sohtun told reporters.

He went on to add, “We will ensure that Shylla do not get the chance to take over the top post as chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

When asked, Sohtun said, “Shylla was instrumental for issuing the no objection certificate (NOC) for uranium mining in the region.”

Shylla was re-elected from Nongkrem constituency during the just concluded bye-elections to the KHADC by defeating the HSPDP candidate, who was also a right hand man of Ardent M Basaiawmoit.

At present, the PDF is enjoying the support of 23 members in the 29-member house, which include 5 from United Democratic Party (UDP) and 4 from the HSPDP.

The other members supporting the PDF are two from Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), one each Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NCP and nine Independent MDCs.

Meanwhile, the HSPDP also maintained that it would withdraw support from the PDF if there is any move to support uranium mining by the incumbent CEM.
