SHILLONG, MAY 1: To check criminal activities at the border and to minimize the participation of youth in militancy, the Border security force organised skill development for the border youths.

“The programme which started in 2016 in collaboration with the Meghalaya government provides an alternate career opportunity for the youth residing at the border who are often targeted by militant groups,” said PK Dubey, IG BSF.

It may be mentioned that Indo- Bangla International border at Meghalaya is a porous area which often let to cross border criminal activities including smuggling.

“This programme aims at enhancing the career opportunities of youngsters living along the international border,” Dubey said.

The youths will be trained in various aspects like physical fitness, general intelligence and reasoning, general knowledge and general awareness, elementary mathematics, Basic English, basic Hindi.

Admitting that criminal activities at the border has a deep rooted cause, Dubey said “it is nothing more than money making business so it will take time to stop such activities.”

By providing better skill development, BSF tries to convey message that there are other better careers than militancy and criminal activities.

“Our endeavour to recruit them into central paramilitary forces which will convey message that there are other better careers than militancy and criminal activities,” he said.

Considering low representation of people from Meghalaya in various central armed forces, including the BSF, a skill-development programme aimed at familiarising border youths with the recruitment procedures in various forces was launched today by the paramilitary force’s Meghalaya frontier.
