SHILLONG, DEC 14: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today admitted the slow progress in the implementation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) projects which include improving of infrastructural standards of schools in the state.
“We expected that the project to be in its advance stage but that did not happen as many schools that were identified have failed to meet the required parameters,” Sangma told the Assembly here on Thursday.
He was replying to a query raised by the leader of opposition Donkupar Roy who in the course of discussion had urged the state government to ask the ADB to speed up expediting the project in the state.
According to him, these schools which do not meet the criteria have been asked to be replaced thereby the process was a bit time consuming.
Sangma further informed that a direction was issued for mapping of all the schools identified as beneficiaries of the project and accordingly prepare a list to shortlist those schools which are eligible.
“We are proceeding in this direction,” the chief minister said while assuring the House that he would soon take up a review on the implementation of the project at his level.
“We will also prevail upon the ADB to simplify the process,” he added.
Stating that it is a fact that the state is a bit slow in the implementation of the projects which involves construction of infrastructures, he said there are some contractors who are very poor in their response.
“Therefore, the department concerned has been asked to pull such contractors who are slow,” he said.
Earlier to a query raised by opposition UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh on schools which have refrain to avail the benefits of the project, education minister Deborah Marak however said that she was not aware of the matter.
She however assured that if there is such instance, she would seek a clarification from these schools.
