Sohra govt college woes

SHILLONG, NOV 3: Meghalaya deputy chief minister (holding education portfolio) RC Laloo said he will direct the department’s official to conduct an inspection on the proposed introduction of science and commerce streams in the Sohra Government College (SGC).

“The minister assured that an inspection by the officials of the education department would soon be conducted at Sohra Government College to examine the proposed introduction of the two streams,” KSU – South Khasi Hills president M Bynnud told reporters after a meeting on Monday.

The report of the inspection would also be submitted to the government for consideration of the proposal, he said.

Established in 1982, the SGC has been offering only Arts course (from 10+2 to degree level) and is catering to over 855 students at present.

However, Bynnud said that the number of students studying in this college is very much less compared to the population of the Sohra Civil Sub-Division which was approximately about 1.10 lakh.

“This has created a lot of problem as many students of the area who wanted to opt for science and commerce have to pursue their further studies in Shillong and other places and that also for those who can’t afford, majority have to sacrifice their aspirations by taking Arts stream in the college,” he informed.

Highlighting the other problems, he said that the college does not have enough classrooms because of the increasing number of students besides transportation services.

“We demand the government to address these problems by providing proper infrastructure including new building and bus services to the students who often have to travel long distances to reach to the institution,” Bynnud said.- By Our Reporter
