Supreme Court allows coal transportation

SHILLONG, SEPT 21: The Supreme Court on Wednesday passed an order allowing Meghalaya to complete the transportation of the already extracted within eight months.

Informing this from Delhi on Wednesday, state Advocate General (AG) Dr BP Todi said, “The supreme court has passed an order allowing transportation of the extracted coal in the state from October 1 to May 31, 2017.”

Dr Todi, who appeared on behalf of the state government, also informed that transportation of coal will be allowed on payment of royalty.

Stating that around 30 lakh metric ton of assessed coal is pending for transportation, the AG said, “The state government is expected to generate revenue of approximately Rs 600 crore.”

Around 50 lakh MT out of 87 lakh MT coal have so far been transported.

Dr Todi  further informed that the state government has also filed an affidavit about the step taken to appeal to the centre for invoking of Para 12 A (b) of the Sixth Schedule for exempting the state from the operation of central laws in respect to coal mining.-By Our Reporter
