Syiem to court arrest

SHILLONG, MAR 3: Noted social activist Michael Syiem on Thursday threatened to mobilize public support for staging a court-arrest protest against the state government’s failure to frame the rules for implementation of the marriage act.

“We will seek public support to stage a court-arrest protest against the failure of the government to come up with the rules for the implementation of the marriage act in the state,” Syiem told reporters on Thursday.

Syiem also announced that he is all set to stage a sit-in-demonstration in-front of the main secretariat tomorrow, during the first day of the state budget session, as a mark of protest against the government’s adamant attitude towards the issue.

“I will alone stage a sit-in-demonstration in-front of the gate of the main secretariat against the delay in framing the rules of the Act,” he said while informing that earlier decision to stage a hunger strike protest was withdrawn.

The protest is part of the 30 year-old campaign to demand the implementation of the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, which was only passed by the State Assembly in 2012.

He informed that the permission to hold the proposed protest on different venues was also turned down by the district administration.

“We had sought for permission to hold the protest at parking lot adjacent to the Additional Secretariat but the district administration declined the request by saying it is because of the Assembly session,” he said adding he did not get permission to hold the protest in Students’ Field, Jaiaw and Malki ground.

Stating he decided to stage the protest alone, Syiem said last time, the state government had framed a case against him under section 188 for disobeying the magistrate order.

When asked, he said, “It is the duty of the MLAs who should be asking the government to frame the rules but they chose not to. It seems they want the divorced women to be their vote bank and keep them dependent on politicians rather than implementing the Act.”

Meanwhile, Syiem informed that cable operators will also be requested to show the play on Romeo and Juliet, which was shot as part of the campaign.-By Our Reporter
