SHILLONG, JULY 23: KHADC executive member (EM)- in-charge trade- James Sylliang wants the intervention of the PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar for repairing of bad roads, especially in the border areas under Mawhati constituency, in Ri Bhoi district.

“I have urged the minister to address the problems the people are facing because of the deplorable condition of the roads in the area,” Sylliang, also an independent MDC from Mawhati, told reporters after the meeting on Thursday.

According to him, the failure of the state government to repair these roads for past four to five years has led to the loss of precious lives and pregnant ladies were made to delivery their babies half way before reaching the hospital.

“Despite having only two PHCs – Mawlasnai and Mawhati- but it has no doctors. Due to this, most of the time, people have to be referred to hospitals in other areas like Shillong for better treatment,” Sylliang said.

He also informed that such roads which are in a deplorable condition includes Lad Mawrong, Lad Mawhati and Lad Umroi till Block II.

When asked, the MDC said, “There are around 132 villages badly affected by the nonchalant attitude of the PWD department for repairing the bad roads.” “Therefore, I have no other option but to approach the government for immediate action in the interest of the people of the area,” he said.

The minister assured of taking up this issue but informed that the state government is going through financial problems.

“The minister informed that a proposal was already submitted for repairing the road from Lad Umroi (Bhoirymbong) up to Block II but till today the funds are yet to be sanctioned,” Sylliang informed.

On the Lad Mawhati road, he said that the minister has assured that the road will be repair soon after the working season starts.- By Our Reporter
