SHILLONG,  AUG 24: Much to the relieve of the students and parents , agitating school teachers on Wednesday decided to suspend their 14-day statewide strike from Friday  after a meeting with the state government to discuss their demands.

The decision to suspend the strike was taken in the meeting of the Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM)  which was held immediately after the meeting with the government chaired by state Chief Secretary KS Kropha.

While the government has agreed to look into some of the demands raised by JACATAM, it  has however refused to entertained the demand for provincialisation of teachers’ services in government aided schools stating that it is financially unfeasible as the state government was going through financial constraint.

JACATAM chairman ED Nongsiang informed newsmen that the state government has agreed to upgrade the Adhoc schools to deficit and also raising the salaries of the teachers.

With regards to the education policy the state government has assured to come up with a logical conclusion within 6 months’ time.

“We are not happy with the outcome of the meeting even though certain points were taken into consideration but what we actually wanted (provincialise of services) was not agreed upon,” Nongsiang lamented during a news conference.

Nongsiang informed that a general meeting will be convened soon to discuss the outcome of today’s meeting. –By Our Reporter
