SHILLONG, DEC 17:The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) and Garo the Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) have jointly demanded the provincialisation of services of all teachers in government-aided schools in the state.
Voicing their demand before union minister of rural resource development M. M. Palam Raju in New Delhi recently, the associations said provincialisation would improve the service condition of the teachers and the general education scenario in the state. KJDSTA president ED Nongsiang told reporters on Monday that the associations in their meeting with the minister discussed the problems faced by the teaching community, including the lack of uniformity in the education system, in the state,.
The delay in the disbursement of teachers’ salaries was also raised in the meeting. “This discourages qualified and talented people from entering the teaching profession. Those who are already in the profession are compelled to take up other means of earning to run their families at the cost of their teaching jobs,” Nongsiang said, adding that this invariably had an adverse affect on their performance which, in turn, impacted the students.
The two associations said Meghalaya has 12, 740 schools and 37, 675 teachers from pre-primary to higher secondary levels. (By Our Reporter)
