SHILLONG, JUNE 2: The managing committee (MC) of a school under the SSA in a remote village of East Khasi hills district has allegedly terminated the service of a teacher and threatened to ostracize other teachers from the village just because they raised their voices against the discrepancies in the functioning MC including unaccountable deduction of their salaries.

The school managing committee of the Rynkuskong Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Lower Primary School had threatened to report to the sordar of the village of Rynkuskong against the two teachers – David R Marak and Saul Chism Sangma- and also  to ostracize them from the village for speaking against the MC of the school.

“The MC had also terminated David R Marak after he filed an FIR with the Mawsynram police station against the discrepancies in the functioning of the committee,” Saul Chism Sangma, a teacher of the school told reporters at a news conference on Monday.

The FIR was filed against the chairman, secretary and CRC co-ordinator of the MC – Marcus Marak, Clement Marak and Benedict Marak respectively.

The appointment of the teachers is done by the MC with the approval of the education department of the state.

According to Sangma, the MC had allegedly reconstituting the school managing committee without convening any meeting with the village elders or the school teachers.

Sangma  said, “The salaries of the teachers had been deducted every month with the consent of the CRC coordinator claiming that it is for the bus fare.”

Stating that the teachers are getting Rs 9000 a month, he further informed that the MC used to deduct around Rs 500 to Rs 2000 from the salaries of the teachers since 2009.

Sangma also informed that the MC had also failed to issue any appointment letters to the teachers since the day they join the schools. But the teachers have been recognized by the education department as letters from the department had come to them directing the need to attend various trainings for the teachers.

Alleging that mid-day meal is being provided to children only three times a year, Sangma said, “The Mid- Day Meals cook’s honorarium is hardly Rs 3000-4000 in a year and the cooks are also changed frequently, as their names are different all the time.”

The two teachers – David and Saul- had on May 16 petitioned to the chief secretary who is also the State Vigilance Commissioner (SVC) seeking his immediate intervention into the matter.

In a letter to the chief secretary, they said, “We urged the authority concerned to take remedial steps and necessary action on the matter.”

Informing that the teachers had proposed to run the school separately – pre-primary and lower primary- the teachers alleged that these MC officials are strongly defending that there should be only one MC for two schools. They said, “Thereby our salary is also extorted and siphoned off and they refuse to have the schools separated which does not confirm to the SSA guidelines.”- By Our Reporter
