SHILLONG, DEC 28: A headless Santa Claus standing in the middle of the fountain at Khyndailad ( Police Bazaar) caught everybody’s attention because only his body remained as the head had gone missing on Saturday. Some might have laughed at the “headless Santa Clause” but it  also seriously reflect the utter disregard to public property put up on public place for giving a festive look to the city.

Policemen who were standing on duty on Saturday afternoon told this reporter that the Santa Clause, which was put up by the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) at the fountain in Khyndailad to give a festive look to the area during Christmas, was in one piece on Friday but on Saturday morning the head went missing.

Passersby stopped to click photograph of the headless Santa Claus from their mobile phones as they did of the Santa Clause that was in one piece earlier. The Santa Clause had become a great attraction to the children who visited Khyndailad with their parents just before it was rendered headless.

A police officer said that though not allowed, but public who have visited the area went up to the fountain to click photograph with the Santa Claus.  Due to heavy rush, those clicking photographs might have mistakenly dislocated the head from Santa Claus body.

“It is nothing relating to theft. But some drunkard persons must have tried to click some photograph with the statue and this might be the reason for the head to have gone missing,” SP M Kharkhrang said.

MTDF chairman RG Lyngdoh, however, the missing head of the Santa Clause could also be of the mischief of some people. He informed that he has directed that the Santa Claus be removed immediately.- By Our Reporter
