Shillong, December 27: John Lanong might look like the ordinary boy next door but as the saying goes “look can be deceiving” and he certainly qualifies to be given the sobriquet of the local bred David Blaine, the world famous street magician. Like Blaine, Lanong is also into illusion and enthralls his audience with his magic wherever he is performs.

A resident of Malki, Lanong has been performing magic since 2008 and he developed the skill since the time he played games of cards as hobby and later developed it into a tool for his magic shows.

Apart from his magic skills, Lanong also loves to do stunt shows as he said that he  drove a car double blind-folded in 2011 and ate a tube light in the year 2012 followed by eating of shaving blades in 2013.

In the upcoming year, Lanong plans to do some big stunts as he is working such performance right now.

Sharing his experience with this website, Lanong said that he first started playing card in 1998 and literally developed techniques of magic by using the cards. He also informs that he love to do illusions and performs magic for children. He performs in private meetings and ceremonies of individuals.

Lanong says that by performing magic he wants to take people back to their childhood days when magic shows were part of the growing up experience.

However, Lanong is bit disappointment with the state government for lack of initiative to provide support to him and promote magic and magicians in the state.

But the brighter side of his magic is that people who had been enthralled by him applauds his talent and refer him to others saying he is a great performer of the art of magic.

In a month, Lanong performs around 2-3 magic shows but there are times when for two months he does not get invited to showcase his talent and captivate people in private or public function thereby making earning difficult.

Lanong normally charges Rs 5000 per show to perform in big hotel and Rs 4000 for those who invite him to perform in private parties.

Lanong is also of the opinion that the state government should come up with some sort of  magic training centre’s or institutes in the state where young kids can be taught and groomed to be magician.

Asked why he does not participate in reality shows, Lanong said participating in such shows requires a lot of basic necessities like assistants and others which he cannot afford it at the moment. – By Our Reporter
