SHILLONG, FEB 14: The Shillong Repertory Theatre (SRT) was formally launched on Saturday with the aim of promoting ‘theatre industry’ in Meghalaya as well as north east region. It is also a platform offering opportunities for young and unemployed youths.

“The concept of forming the SRT is to create a platform for the youths of state including the region to make a career in the theater industry,” SRT founder and artistic director Tarun Singh Negi said while speaking at the launch on Saturday..

According to Negi, there are various segments of the theatre society which offers job opportunities for the local youths who are keen to make it their career. Stating that the SRT would be recruiting youths in various capacities, he also informed that the organization is contemplating to start absorbing over 100 youths to work under it at the initial stage.

Negi informed that the organization will be opening its registration for employment workshops which will commence from February 15.

Elaborating more on the objective of these workshops, Negi said, “This workshop is aimed at providing employment and business opportunities under the proposed North East Forward Socio Ventures (NEFSV) for the unemployed youth.” Informing that short term theatre workshops are also on the card, he said these are for meant for the youth who wants to pursue career in theatre and performing arts.

Negi informed that these workshops would be regularly held by the SRT.

Spelling out its ambitious plan, Negi said, “The organization through these workshops is planning to gather and ensemble for a world tour starting in Australia in October this year,” adding “This production will travel with an aim to promote Meghalaya as a world destination.”

It is also learnt that the SRT is also contemplating to team up with the practitioners from across the globe as well independent practitioners from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi who will be the primary practitioner for most of the workshops.

“We also want to promote and support contemporary theatres practices and practitioners from across the globe. It will be generating interest and attention of world theatre and art lovers towards Shillong, a dream of the clouds and hub of world theatre  in the making,” Negi said.- By Our Reporter
