SHILLONG, JULY 17: Rich tributes were paid to the Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem on his 179th death anniversary on Thursday. The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and regional political parties paid floral tributes to the freedom fighter who had rebelled against the British empire and become an legend.

Early Thursday morning, a function was held at the U Tirot Sing Indoor stadium to commemorate the death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem  and other leaders like former president of the union Samuel B Jyrwa and others spoke  A two minutes silence was also observed by the members of the union to mark the death anniversary of the great freedom fighter.

Political parties like the United Democratic Party (UDP), Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) also paid floral to great freedom fighter.

The Hima Nongkhlaw, U Tirot Sing Syiem erstwhile kingdom, also observed his death anniversary.

Meanwhile, the members of the newly formed Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) also observed the day.  HYC convener Donboklang Kharlyngdoh expressed concern over the lack of commitment in the leadership of the state.

Kharlygdoh said, “The present day leadership lacks commitment on many front especially on the issues concerning the state.”  He said there is need to revive the spirit of such freedom fighters and the present day leaders should follow his  footprints.

U Tirot Singh, the tribal Khasi chief of Nongkhlaw Kingdom, was the first tribal Khasi ruler to rebel against the British empire in 1829. However, on January 13, 1833 the British forces treacherously captured him and kept him in captivity at Dhaka where he died on July 17, 1835.- By Our Reporter
