Tura college demands

SHILLONG, MAR 1: The Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) has demanded immediate appointment of a full-fledged principal and vice-principal besides seeking improvement in the all round infrastructural development in the college.

“We urged the state government to consider the demands and take necessary steps for the welfare and interest of the students’ fraternity in Garo Hills region,” TGCSU general secretary Balkarin Ch Marak said in a 19-point charter of demands submitted to chief minister Mukul Sangma.

He informed, the college has been functioning without a full-fledged principal since September last year after the retirement of Biana W Momin and without a vice principal for the last one and a half year which has affected the smooth functioning of the college and students.

He said that former vice principal, Cherry Nora K Sangma from Tura Govt. College was appointed as a Principal to Williamnagar Govt. College in East Garo Hills District.

More than 6,000 students studying in the college are suffering because of lack of infrastructure and developments in the College. Comparing the students’ ratio to the development and infrastructures in the college it insufficient for the students, teaching and non-teaching staffs,he stated.

The other demands includes – creation of more post for the ministerial staff, creation of post for the College Library, introduction of new subjects; like Sociology, Statistics, Anthropology and introduction of honours in Geography, necessities in the hostel, appointment of teachers to the vacant posts (there are more than fifteen sanction posts lying vacant without anyone being appointed), speed up the construction of residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staffs, quarterly disbursement of salary for morning shift lecturers and others.-By Our Reporter
