Two more die of COVID-19, 347 new cases detected in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, MAY 6: The death toll due to COVID-19 has gone up to 193 in the state after two more persons have succumbed to the viral infection on Thursday.

The state has recorded yet another highest single-day spike of 347 new cases, taking the total number of active cases to 2,351, while 129 have recovered from the disease, pushing up the number of recoveries to 16,086.

83-year-old Munni Ruddil Ahmed of Umsohphoh, Ri Bhoi district passed away at the Shillong civil hospital due to acute ARDS with Covid pneumonia with type 2 diabetes mellitus on Wednesday, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.

He said another person, Aroti Das (50) also died at her residence in Cheklabasti, Ichamati in East Khasi Hills today. “Sample was taken and tested positive with RAT,” he added.

Dr War said the new cases include 177 in East Khasi Hills district, 56 Ri Bhoi district, 23 West Khasi Hills district, 22 West Garo Hills district, 20 South Garo Hills district, 14 East Jaintia Hills district, 11 West Jaintia Hills district, 10 East Garo Hills district, 7 South West Garo Hills district, 4 North Garo Hills district and 2 South West Khasi Hills district.

He informed that of 129 patients who have recovered from the viral infection, 89 are from East Khasi Hills district, 14 Ri Bhoi, 10 West Garo Hills, 9 West Jaintia Hills, 5 East Jaintia Hills and 2 South West Khasi Hills.

So far, the state has detected a total of 18,630 COVID-19 cases out of which 2,351 are active cases, 16,086 recovered and 193 deaths.

With 1,464 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, that includes state capital Shillong is the worst affected district in the state, followed by Ri Bhoi with 240 cases, 172 West Garo Hills, 104 East Jaintia Hills, 103 West Khasi Hills, 102 in West Jaintia Hills, 47 South Garo Hills, 40 East Garo Hills, 33 South West Garo Hills, 23 South West Khasi Hills, and 23 in North Garo Hills.

On the other hand, of the 4,77,676 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 4,59,046 were tested negative for the virus even as 477 persons are in institutional quarantine and 1,874 under home quarantine.

There are 1,16,149 entrants from outside the state.

25,996 healthcare workers had received the first dose of Covishield vaccine and 18,734 had received the second dose, while 49,340 frontline workers got the first shot of the vaccine and 25,221 got the second dose as on Thursday.

Moreover, 1,81,082 persons from among the general public were vaccinated with the first dose and 20,363 were inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the state.
