Union Minister of State for Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar during her interaction with the Press said that under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made phenomenal progress in delivering healthcare services to the innermost regions and remote areas of the nation. She said that the northeastern states have benefitted immensely from innovations and initiatives taken in the health sector, and schemes like Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centers among others are successfully providing primary healthcare services at grassroot level.

She congratulated ICMR and other stakeholders for successfully hosting the research orientation workshop for the northeast region, the first of its kind, in the beautiful city of Shillong. She expressed her belief that there will be many positive takeaways for the northeastern states at the end of this workshop and through these learning they will try to make health technologies available, accessible, affordable and equitable in their respective states in the coming times.

Explaining the purpose of the workshop, Dr Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research and DG, ICMR said, “Through this workshop we want to discuss all the research priorities for the northeast states so that we can start specific research projects for NE. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on research and innovation is exemplified from the fact that he has added the term Jai Anusandhan to the ever popular slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan.

He added, “The Prime Minister is giving extreme importance to innovation and research and I also have the opinion that we cannot become Viksit Bharat without becoming a powerhouse in research, but we also believe that research is to solve the problems of the people, and therefore we have to discuss the problems that the North Eastern states, the National Health Missions in the states are struggling with. So we want to identify those priorities and start projects on those priorities.”

Dr Bahl said that another objective of the workshop is to make affordable health technology available to the state. “We should use the resources in the most judicious way and we should get it at the lowest cost and make it affordable to the people of India. Which will only be possible through products which are developed and made in India,” he added. Dr Bahl said that the workshop will discuss in detail the concept and domains of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), recent advancements in the field, and its role in policy making in the healthcare sector.

Smt. Anu Nagar, Joint Secretary, Department of Health Research; Shri Sampath Kumar, Principal Health Secretary, Meghalaya and senior officials of the Union Government and Government of Meghalaya were present on the occasion.
