SHILLONG, MAR 18: Predicting the worst ever Congress performance in the Lok Sabha elections since Independence, United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Paul Lyngdoh Tuesday said that he is the only candidate belonging to the regional party that represents the hopes and aspirations of the peoples of the state and, therefore, is confident that the electorates will make him a winner in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections for the Shillong parliamentary seat.

Speaking to this website before and after he filed his nomination papers for the April 9 Lok Sabha elections for the Shillong parliamentary seat on Tuesday, the suave and articulate Lyngdoh is convinced that the electorates will reject the sitting Congress MP Vincent Pala and instead vote for him as their MP.

Saying that there is a wave against the Congress party throughout the country, Lyngdoh quipped, “How can the electorates vote for Vincent Pala who had been sacked as a minister by the UPA government? And only the UPA knows why he had been sacked.”

Confident of upsetting the Congress during the April 9 voting, Lyngdoh said that the electorates in the whole country, including Meghalaya, are fed up of its misrule and the trend is that the Congress is in its decline because of this reason.

Claiming that to represent a Lok Sabha constituency in the parliament, the elected representative must not only have political and administrative experience but also the ability to make his voice heard for the welfare of the state and the people, Lyngdoh- who is a three times legislators- said he has both the experience and the ability to make people stand up and take notice of the issues that he takes up.

Lyngdoh said, “I am optimistic that the electorates of the state will make a wise decision in electing me and we are confident that the people will use their intelligence and be observant.”

Lyngdoh also summarily dismissed the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) prediction that he will lose the elections. He said, “ Comparatively, both the parties (HSPDP and KHNAM) are small parties who does not have the presence like the UDP in Khasi and Jaintia hills so am not giving so much of credence to what they are saying.”

Lyngdoh said that Common People Front (CPF)’s candidate PBM Basaiawmoit is an Independent candidate who is being supported by the HSPDP and KHNAM and does not represents the regional party. He asserted, “The UDP is the only regional party that is in fray in the parliamentary elections.”

Lyngdoh also said as the only candidate of the regional party, he and the party is more attuned to the aspirations of the people of Khasi and Jaintia hills.

Lyngdoh said, “ I and the party I represent know the needs and aspirations of the people of the region and as I do not have high command like the Congress to answer to I   can be expected to represent these aspirations at the people of this region in the highest institution of the Indian democracy.”- By Our Reporter
