Vendor’s murder case

SHILLONG, SEPT 6: The recent murder of a street vendor has been treated as a special report case by the police even as shopkeepers are requested to install CCTVs in view of rising crimes in the city.

Speaking to reporters here, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said that the case is being treated as a special report case under the direct supervision of the SP’s office.

“We are still investigating into the matter by looking at all angles. The field is wide but I am sure we will narrow down and catch the culprits,” he said.

He said police are also looking at the CCTV footages in the surrounding area and people in the vicinity including co-hawkers are being examined.

Anjana Sinha, a street vendor, who sold food items at Khyndailad, was brutally murdered at Keating Road on September 3. The incident took place at around 1 am, after she shut her shop and had gone to store her goods.

Asked, the SP said at the moment police are yet to ascertain whether it is a case of murder for gain or whether there was any sexual assault, which will be known after receiving the post mortem report.

However, no money was found from the victim’s body but her ornaments were intact, he said.

To another query, Syiem said there was no prima facie evidence or no pointer as to her husband’s involvement in the case.

On whether patrolling have intensified in the area after the incident, he however said patrolling have always been intensified in all strategic places but the incident happened in a corner and remote place.

He also urged hawkers who are engaging with their business activities till late night to be more careful adding especially women should avoid going alone to dark isolated area.

On the other hand, Syiem also urged shopkeepers to install CCTVs at the entrance of their respective shops taking into consideration the increasing cases of crimes against properties.

“They (shopkeepers) can always seek assistance of the police on resolution and placement of the cameras as it is also important they are facing outward,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have also submitted a proposal for installing of another 30 additional CCTVs in those strategic locations which are yet to be covered. One of the locations identified is the junction near the Raj Bhavan.

According to the SP, the proposal is still awaiting the approval of the state government.

Installation of the CCTVs is aimed at helping the police in fighting crimes, law and order problem and traffic congestion in the city.
