Villagers kill extortionists

TURA, JULY 15: Three extortionists were lynched to death on Monday in Jambal village under Rongjeng police station in Meghalaya’sEast Garo Hills, a delayed report said. Villagers reported the matter on Tuesday at Ronjeng police station. East Garo hills SP Davis Nestell R Marak said, “We have been informed that a group of dacoits tried to extort money from the villagers on Monday night by threatening them with small weapons. The angry villagers retaliated by attacking them and three were killed while the rest fled.”

The unidentified men had descended on the village on Monday evening and  demanded that the villagers pay them tax. They had threatened some of the elders with pistols and when the people decided to oppose them, the dacoits reportedly open fire in the air to scare them off.

The public, however, refused to be cowed down and instead decided to thrash them. Three of the extortionists were caught and beaten to death while the rest of the gang managed to escape.

Police teams from Rongjeng have left for the village to retrieve the bodies of the three dacoits.- From Our Correspondent
