Vulnerable govt doctors to launch stir

SHILLONG, DEC 18: Agitated and concern over the frequent attacks on government doctors in Garo hills districts, the government doctors under the banner of Meghalaya Medical Service Association (MMSA) has threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government fails to provide adequate security to those working not only in the militants’ prone but also susceptible to criminal attacks from across Bangladesh in Garo hills.

The latest attack on a doctor and medical staff of the Mahendraganj Community Health Center (CHC)  last Saturday by around eleven Bangladeshis criminals who crossed over to Garo hills and looted and assaulted them has heighten the medical fraternity concern over the safety of their colleagues posted in remote places in the Garo hills districts.

The Bangladeshis hoodlums not only assaulted  Dr Apchan Sangma in the Mahendraganj CHC but also took away Rs 7000 from her and a gold ornament and mobile phone from one of the lady staff.

The attack on the medical staff of the Mahendraganj CHC is preceded by an assaults of a doctor by the police at Chokpot and followed by a threat to another lady doctor at Baghmara at gun-point by the ANVC-B militants just because she could not deliver the report on malaria test on time.

A meeting of the MMSA took cognizance of the threat to government doctors in far-flung areas of Garo hills and accused the government of failing to provide adequate security to the medical fraternity in these areas despite to their demand on the need to provide adequate security.

Left with no option the MMSA has threatened to launch indefinite strike if government is not serious in listening to their demand and providing the medical staff with adequate security in areas that are prone to militants and criminals attack.

The MMSA state executive committee will meet on December 22 to chalk out plan for holding the indefinite strike. Similarly, the Garo hills unit of the MMSA will also meet at Tura to simultaneously discuss the security issue of doctors working in the Garo hills region:- By Our Reporter
