SHILLONG, APR 17: Notwithstanding the Meghalaya High Court ruling barring traditional heads from issuing any kind of certificate, a Wahkhen village sordar Skhembor Khongjirem said that the dorbar shnong is issuing residential certificates to its residents as such certificate is demanded by the banks and state government.

“We cannot deny the people who require the residential certificates from a headman because till today banks and even the state departments are still asking for certificates issued by us,” Khongjirem told reporters during a media conference on Friday.

Khongjirem said the decision of the dorbar shnong to issue certificates has help the residents, especially, farmers applying for loan and schemes of the state government.

Responding to media reports that said Wahkhen market has been closed down by the police, Khongjirem said this is not true. He informed, “The market is still being held at Wahkhen on every market day.” He alleged that some persons with vested interest have been trying to mislead the media by alleging that the police had closed down the market.

According to Khongjirem, when the dorbar shnong had sought clarification from the police, the police feigned ignorance.

With regard to the allegation that miscreants have recently blocked a local taxi in Wahkhen village, Khongjirem clarified that it is not miscreants as reported in the media but the Village Defence Party (VDP) members doing their duty by checking illegal supply of liquor into the village.

Khongjirem said, “The checking drive was conducted ahead of a festival organized by the Wahkhen raid held on April 14 to ensure that law and order situation is maintained.” He informed that over 60 litres of illegal liquor was seized during the checking drive.

Khongjirem also warned rumour mongers with vested interested to refrain from spreading such rumours about the village and said if anyone is found guilty of such act, the village authority along with the law enforcement authority will take stern action against them as per the law of the land.- By Our Reporter
