Welfare for ex-militants

SHILLONG, JULY 21: A delegation of the Peace Committee Garo Hills, Meghalaya (PCGHM) wanted the state government to take up necessary measures for the welfare of the surrendered cadres belonging to various militant outfits.

The committee met the Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak and Parliamentary Secretary in-charge Industry Limison D Sangma in the state’s capital on Wednesday to discuss on the issue.

The delegation was led by Rev Fr Januarius Sangma, Rev Frithing D Sangma, Roger Benny A. Sangma, Nikman Ch Marak, Rockey Fiellier M Sangma and Rakseng R Marak.

During the meeting, the committee emphasized the urgent need to take up counseling, skills development and recreational activity like sports & games for the surrendered cadres of Garo hills.

Home Minister assured the delegates to expedite the issue and urged the general public to cooperate with the government to bring peace and development in Garo Hills.

In their meeting with social welfare minister, the delegates discussed on the various schemes under Social welfare department which can be used for youngster to prevent youths from joining anti-social elements.

They have also sought the intervention of parliamentary secretary in-charge Industry, pertaining to youths regarding entrepreneurship, self-employment and to motivate youngsters of Garo Hills to prepare for competitive exams.

The parliamentary secretary assured the delegation to set up awareness programme and career counseling in all the districts of Garo hills.-By Our Reporter
