SHILLONG, MAY 24: Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Salseng C Marak said that he is going to suggest for holding of party and  CLP meetings to discuss the party’s debacle in the recently concluded Tura Lok Sabha bye-poll before demanding for replacement of Mukul Sangma as the chief minister.

Flatly denying that the MPCC president DD Lapang has a letter signed by some party legislators and ministers demanding replacement of the present chief minister, Marak said, “This is not true, Lapang doesn’t have any such letter and we have not reached the stage for demanding replacement of Mukul  Sangma as chief minister.”

After the monumental Congress defeat during the Tura Lok Sabha bye-poll where the NPP candidate Conrad K  Sangma won by defeating Congress candidate and chief minister Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikkanchi Shira by nearly  2 lakhs votes, the  Congress party is in absolute disarray with party legislators and ministers  reportedly clambering  for change of CLP leader.

However, Marak feels that the party and CLP meeting must first discuss who is responsible for the Congress debacle in the just concluded Tura Lok Sabha bye-poll and only after pinpointing whether the defeat was because of the party or individual- chief minister Mukul Sangma- demand for changes should be made accordingly.

When asked if he was willing to support DD Lapang as the chief minister, Marak quipped, “We have not reached that stage, let us first discuss who is responsible, the party collectively or the individual, and then accordingly we should act.”

Marak said this time he and even party workers could not read the mind of the electorates and said Congress supporters voted for the NPP leading to Conrad landslide victory.-By Our Reporter
