SHILLONG, JUN 3: The ruling Congress party is keeping a closed watch on whether the recent pre-poll alliance of the two regional political parties will have a “backdoor alliance” with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“This kind of alliance among the regional parties is not new as it has always taken place. But the question will be whether this alliance between the UDP-HSPDP will have a backdoor alliance with the BJP,” chief minister Mukul Sangma said here.
He said that this is because they are also partners in the BJP led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), which is a platform used by the BJP to penetrate to states where they cannot penetrate directly.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) is one among the political parties from Meghalaya which is a member of the NEDA. The Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) however is not a member.
Accusing the BJP of ‘piggy-riding’ on the regional parties, Sangma said, “So we will watch and see and accordingly articulate before the electorate of the state, which we have full faith and trust.”
“We would be engaging in that exercise so that people will know about any such backdoor nexus and the BJP piggy riding on the regional parties, to penetrate and destroy the state,” he said.
Stating that the electorates of Meghalaya are not the same like those in Assam and other states, the chief minister said that he is proud of them (electorate) because they are more alert and vigilant.
“And we want to ensure they become more enlighten so that they can take decision insync with the kind of agenda they would like to set for the state and the people,” he added.
