SHILLONG, MAR 27: Yesteryear doyen of Meghalaya politics and hills state movement leader Paty Ripple Kyndiah died on Thursday night after cardiac attack. He was admitted in Bethany hospital but passed away before midnight.

Kyndiah’s funeral will take place on Sunday at the All Saints cemetery. Kyndiah is survived by two daughters, three sons and grandchildren.

The eighty seven years old Kyndiah lived a chequered political and social life as he carved himself a niche in the political landscape of the state and the region. A prolife writer with many books to his credit, he was a gifted orator and some of his debates in the state assembly are still cherished by old timers who had an opportunity to listen to him debating.

A gifted and farsighted politician,  Kyndiah climbed up the political ladder and went on to become the  union minister of tribal affairs in 2004 after he had a long and fulfilling political career in the state occupying various positions from acting chief minister to cabinet minister and Meghalaya legislative assembly speaker.

Kyndiah also held a gubernatorial post as Mizoram governor from 1993 to 1998.

Kyndiah was actively involved in the hills state movement and went on to become the general secretary of the erstwhile All Party Hill Leaders Conference and later he joined the Congress with other leaders of the APHLC.

A voracious reader, Kyndiah had a well kept personal library in his residence and was passionate of writing books. Very few in the political annals of Meghalaya could equal Kyndiah- perhaps with the exception of former chief minister BB Lyngdoh- on the rules and procedure of the Meghalaya legislative assembly.- By Our Reporter
