SHILLONG, AUG 31: The Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar (MPCA) today asked the Centre and State governments not to over-reach in taking forward the Aadhaar enrolment pending the disposal of the Aadhaar case by the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued here, MPCA convener PBM Basaiawmoit said that the governments and their ministries, departments, institutions including health, educational, traditional and of local self government, banks, mobile companies, different Government and private agencies & companies are urged not to over-reach in taking forward Aadhaar enrolment through various means and modus operandi.

“Rather, to await upon disposal of the Aadhaar case by Supreme Court and to also take cognizance of the August 24-Ruling given by the Nine Judge Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court on the Right to Privacy,” he said.

According to him, this is in view that the date for Aadhaar enrolment has been extended up to December 31, and that the Aadhar Bench of Supreme Court will hold hearings in the month of November.

Stating that the 2016 Aadhaar Act has stated that Aadhaar is not mandatory, he said that so all those under the age of 18 must be exempted from enrolment as they do not yet have the freedom of making personal choice on the matter.

Meanwhile, the MPCA also appealed to the Supreme Court to advance the date for hearing and disposal of the pending Aadhaar case as one month’s period between November and December, would too short a time to carry out the necessities, particularly, in the context of Meghalaya and Assam.
