MUDA bye-laws welcomed by headmen

SHILLONG, AUG 31: Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh today said had the state government is trying to bring villages in Mylliem constituency under the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), people would have avail benefits of schemes like the MNREGS.

“Places identified within the jurisdiction of the MUDA do not get the benefits of the MNREGS but in Mylliem all villages including Umlyngka, Nongkseh and others are still availing this scheme,” Lyngdoh, also a local MLA from the area told reporters here on Thursday.

Stating that over 165 families were recently given scheme to procure two cattle each, he said that now if the government is trying to put Mylliem under MUDA, then it would not have given such scheme as you cannot take up animal rearing if villages are under the MUDA.

He further claimed that the area is having a thriving dairy especially 107 odd families from Umlyngka village are generating a monthly income of Rs 50 lakh.

Lyngdoh said that he is confidence that the present government will come back to power as it has been able to deliver.

“We are not only looking into infrastructural development aspect but livelihood aspect as well because with scarcity of jobs, we have to support activities of the people,” he said.

He however said except for the building byelaws, the MUDA have not implemented any other activities.

Earlier last week, residents of 12 villages under Upper Shillong in a meeting convened by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Upper Shillong have resolved to oppose the alleged encroachment of MUDA in the area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the KHADC.

Admitting that MUDA is an issue, the minister however claimed that most of the village headmen in Upper Shillong have welcomed the implementation of the building byelaws.

“Every law enact is for the benefit of the people. If inconveniences are caused to the people, we are looking into it,” he said adding “And most of the rangbah shnongs in Upper Shillong have welcomed the building byelaws because when there is no regulation they find it difficulties to regulate building constructions in their villages.”

He however admitted that there are some hiccups whereby the officers instead of helping people act as hindrance and we are looking into that and those issue.

“While implementing this building byelaws, if there are difficulties we are going to resolved it. But by and large people have welcomed the building byelaws,” he added.

Meanwhile, sitting HSPDP MDC from Mylliem Teilinia Thangkhiew and UDP youth leader Hamlet Dohling are gearing up to contest against Lyngdoh in the upcoming 2018 state elections.

Asked, Lyngdoh said that the people will judge his performance and if they still think that he is able to serve them he would do it willingly and gladly with all humility to serve the people of Mylliem.

“My performance will speak for itself and after all it is the people who will decide,” he added.
