Administration prepares to tackle cyclonic storm

dcSHILLONG, MAY 16: Taking note of the Indian Meteorological Department warning that heavy rain will lashed northeast over the next three days and the tropical cyclone Mahasen might impact Meghalaya, the East Khasi hills district administration has directed the district disaster management committees to be alert for any eventual natural disaster like cyclone.

Different government agencies have also been alerted and be in a state of preparedness should cyclone Mahasen impact Meghalaya as warned by the meteorological department.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said on Thursday, “The district administration has asked the district disaster management committee to keep alert for any eventuality.”

A control room with no-2225289 has been set-up, Goyal informed adding that this arrangement is apart from other numbers of the officials as well as police PCR 100.

Goyal also said that the Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Gram Sevaks in the different places have been directed to camp in their respective areas for the next 48 hours.

Goyal also informed that the administration has also communicated to the Civil Defence and other authorities to be alert for any such eventuality.

Goyal said assessment of relief has already been undertaken and enough stock of relief material including food items available to be dispatched on a short notice to various part of the district has been completed.

Goyal, however, said that per the metrological report, Meghalaya is unlike to experience direct impact of the cyclone except for heavy rainfall in various pockets.

The Indian Meteorological department has warned that northeast India could reel under heavy thunder squalls and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to be affected..

As per the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected in the northeast over the next three days. The region could also face heavy winds measuring from 65-75km per hour that could gust to 85kmph.

On May 17, heavy winds measuring 50-60kmph gusting to 70kmph are also expected.- By Our Reporter
