Ampati will be the jewel in NPP’s crown

SHILLONG, MAY 9: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) leading the six party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government today said that the Ampati seat will be the “jewel in the crown” for the party.

“We have got the crown and Ampati is the jewel in the crown,” NPP state president Dr Wanwei R Kharlukhi said while addressing at a first of its kind felicitation programme to honour the newly elected MLAs of the party here on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur Yumnam Joykumar Singh urged the party in Meghalaya to work hard and ensure the party’s victory from Ampati, which is a stronghold of the Congress.

NPP state working president Semford B Sangma also expressed confidence that the party under the dynamic leadership of national president Conrad K Sangma will emerged as the strongest political party in Meghalaya.

The NPP has fielded Clement G Momin as its candidate for the upcoming bye election in Ampati which is scheduled to be held on May 28.

Clement will take on Opposition Leader Mukul’s daughter Miani D Shira, who is the Congress candidate for the bye-election to the Ampati seat.

It may be mentioned here that Clement had unsuccessfully contested against Mukul twice.In the 2008 election, he lost on an NCP ticket to Mukul by a margin of 2,966 votes. However, in the 2013 elections, the victory margin of Mukul soared to a staggering 9,036 votes.

The Election was necessitated after Mukul Sangma resigned from Ampati after having won from two seats in the February 27 elections.

28,673 registered voters will cast their votes in 39 polling stations.

The last date of filing of nominations will be May 10 and the next day will be the scrutiny of nomination papers.

The last date of withdrawal of nominations will be on May 14 and the bye-elections will be held on May 28. The results will be declared on May 31.
