SHILLONG, MAY 9: National People’s Party (NPP) national chief Conrad K Sangma today said that the party will fight the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha from all the seats in the North East and ensure it comes out as the only “alternative” for the people of the region.
Conrad, who is also chief minister of Meghalaya, was addressing at the first of its kind felicitation programme organized by the party to felicitate its ministers and MLAs from Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium here on Wednesday.
“The 2019 Lok Sabha election is important for us and we will fight throughout the North East to see that the NPP comes out as an alternative and this is possible if we all put our heads together,” he said.
The NPP chief said that he has been talking to the leaders of the party’s state units in Manipur, Mizoram and Assam and they all expressed that the party needs to contest from all the seats in their respective states.
Stating that putting all the knowledge of the leaders together, the party is having five-thousand years of experience, he said can you imagine the difference we can make if minds are brought together and work on the goal that is to focus on the North East.
“We are going to work hard and let us go with conviction and ensure the NPP is in every corner of the North East and become the party of the region,” he said adding “The purpose of this meeting is to send a message to the people that we want to give that confident to the people of the region that there is a political party which really focuses on our issues and our needs.”
Also remembering his late father Purno Agitok Sangma, who is the founder of the NPP, Conrad said that the NPP is a party with a difference and is growing from strength to strength due to the foundation and ideas laid by the late leader.
“It is his (Purno) vision and ideas which has brought us together today and the party is working hard to achieve the goals and fulfill his dreams,” he said.
Asserting that the NPP’s ideology and goal is to be a party that will represent the indigenous people of the North East and the country, he said that the party is having representatives and recognized in three states of the region.
Conrad, who is also presently the Member of Parliament from Tura said that the next challenge before the party will be the upcoming elections in the state of Mizoram.
“Our team in Mizoram has been working for the past one and a half year and I can tell you that Mizoram is also having a hope that there will be a change this time and feel that it is the NPP with its strong ideology and focus on the NE is the only party that can provide an alternative in Mizoram,” he said.
Lauding idea of the state party to come up with such a felicitation programme which has not been done by other political parties, the chief minister expressed that he was surprised that he was also being felicitated though yet to be an elected member of the Assembly and took it as a felicitation in advance.
Conrad is however yet to decide on the seat from which he is going to contest to continue as the chief minister before the end of the six months time. He had sworn in as CM of the state on March 6.
The others who were felicitated by the NPP state president WR Kharlukhi include deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, home minister James K Sangma, C&RD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, GAD minister Comingone Ymbon and the lone woman legislator of the party from South Tura Agatha K Sangma.
Deputy chief minister of Manipur Yumnam Joykumar Singh and other MLAs from Nagaland were also felicitated during the occasion.
The NPP had won in as many as 19 seats in the February 27 Assembly elections and the number later increased to 20 following its victory in the just concluded Williamnagar seat.
