TURA, OCT 17: A conglomeration of civil organisations on Monday urged the deputy commissioner of West Garo hills Pravin Bakshi to ensure immediate arrest of all accused in the alleged murder of a youth.

On October 13, three youths were beaten by residents of a locality, of which one succumbed to the injuries. Police arrested eight people in connection with the incident.

Police had rescued the youths on October 13 around 12:25 am.

In a letter to Bakshi, the organisations said that seven people named in the murder should be arrested and severely penalized. They sought a probe into the role of the doctor, who on duty apparently could not differentiate between a serious case and a normal routine check-up.

“The guilty doctor should be suspended for negligence. A doctor, who does not know about concussions, internal bleeding and internal injury is useless”, the letter to Bakshi said.

After examination, the doctor at Tura Civil Hospital had released the youths, who were than kept at the police station. Police said that the minor boys did not provide necessary details, so it became difficult for them to contact their parents.

The GSU has also sought suspension of police official, who has allegedly manhandled the youths. “Enquiry must be made into the incident as to why a seriously injured person is kept in police detention instead of referring him to a hospital as early as possible”, the statement said

The conglomeration further demanded actions to curb unlawful and illegal activities, which were going on in the locality. “Enquiry must be initiated as to why the sale of drugs, illicit liquor, sale of liquor in the black market and prostitution is possible in the (locality), under the nose of the administration and the police”, the statement said.

Taking a dig at a particular community, the conglomeration said, “We are in a mood to once more aggressively pursue demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) because this type of illegal migration is diluting the demographic structure of Garo hills”.

The conglomeration has requested all shops in Tura to remain close on October 19 from 5 am to 5 pm, as mark of condolence and mourning for the death of the youth.

The conglomeration comprises of Garo Students Union, Association for Democracy and Empowerment, Federation of A’chik Freedom, A’chik Youth Welfare Organisation and Garo Hills State Movement Demand Committee.-From Our Correspondent
