Auto driver, militant killed

TURA, JUNE 8: Unidentified militants killed an auto rickshaw driver Somendro Paul on Sunday at Chepagre village, near Ampati in South  West Garo hills while one of the GNLA militants who was beaten by the public succumbed to his injuries in government hospital.

Paul was shot by two suspected militants at Chepagre village when he refused to ferry them. Later he succumbed to his injuries at a government hospital.

Paul, a resident of Palpara village of Mahendraganj earned his living by driving his auto rickshaw. He narrated the incident at the community health centre at Ampati, where the police recorded his statement.

According to police, Paul was hired by some villagers from Ampati market towards Chepagre village on the road to Salmanpara at around 9:30 am. After dropping his passengers off at Chepagre, 7 kms from Ampati, two youth signaled his auto rickshaw to stop on the outskirts of the village.

They asked Paul to give them a lift in his auto rickshaw which he refused as his rickshaw was low on fuel and needed to get back to Ampati. Angry by his refusal, one of them shot him in the back from a close range.

In another incident one of the two suspected GNLA militants, who were beaten by angry villagers yesterday at Jaksongram, near Baghmara in South Garo Hills died on Sunday at a government hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Nikho Marak. The other militant who is yet to be identified is critically injured and undergoing treatment.

Both of them had gone to the village to serve demand notes. Jaksongram is located at a distance of about 15 km from Baghmara town.

Police said that the villagers’ mustered courage to surround them on Saturday evening and despite intimidation thrashed them. Later they were handed over to Baghmara police.

The seized demand notes of the GNLA quoting sums ranging from five and ten lakhs were also handed over to the police by the public.- By Our Reporter

    I appreciate….them,..if the government did not takle the issue in Garo hills they have to provide weapons to the public.
