SHILLONG, JULY 10: The National People’s Party (NPP) has demanded the resignation of Meghalaya PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar over the unfortunate accident of the collapse of an under construction bridge in Kolmesal Nengsangre near Williamnagar in East Garo hills district where a PWD junior engineer was killed and sixteen labourers were injured on Tuesday.

The NPP legislator James K Sangma  has blamed the Dhar for the bridge collapse of the bridge that killed the engineer. He said,  “The PWD (Roads) minister should take moral .responsibility for this accident and resign immediately.”

In a press communiqué issued on Wednesday Sangma said,   “The accident, on the face of it, seems to have happened due to gross negligence on the part of the department.” He expressed concern over the poor functioning of the PWD department.

Sangma stated that the shoddy implementation is evident from the slow pace of work of all the projects that are being implemented throughout the state like the NH 40, the Simsang Bridge, Rongram-Phulbari hill road widening and others.

NPP has urged chief minister Mukul Sangma to oversee the functioning of the department and ensure speedy and proper implementation of all the pending projects under the PWD.

Sangma also demanded immediate release of ex-gratia compensation to the family of the deceased and also offered his condolences to the bereaved family of the engineer. –By Our Reporter
