Clan: Inquiry into death

SHILLONG, JULY 7: Suspecting foul play, the Kharkongor clan on Tuesday demanded magisterial inquiry into the death of Victoria D Kharkongor, who allgedly committed suicide inside a toilet in Dispur police station.

The Dispur police claimed that she committed suicide inside the polic station toilet which the Kharkongor clan find it hard to believe. The decision to demand for magisterial inquiry was taken at an emergent meeting of the of the clan held on Tuesday.
“We will move the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that there should be a magisterial inquiry to ascertain the facts that led to the death,” KHNAM MDC from Nongthymmai Latiplang Kharkongor told newsmen .

Kharkongor, who is a member of the clan said, “The decision was taken after the members strongly objected the allegation that she (Victoria) was suffering from some sort of mental illness.”

“We don’t believe and cannot accept that she has committed suicide and that she was suffering from mental illness as claimed by the police,” he said.

Stating that Victoria was a teacher in Hyderabad and had even been awarded for her services, Kharkongor said, “We highly suspected there is some foul play.” He said he saw the photograph inside the toilet which is less than 5 feet and it is impossible for her to commit suicide.
He further informed that the relatives said that on July 2, she had called her mother when she boarded a train informing that she is on her way to Calcutta heading home and on July 3, she had contacted her aunty informing that she has reached Calcultta and would be coming to Guwahati and then Shillong.

He said according to the family members the call she made on July 3rd was the last until yesterday when they received a call from Dispur police informing about the incident. He said it is also not clear how she arrive at the International Hospital.- By Our Reporter
