CM assures of security to headman threaten by Assam based militants

Shillong, Oct 18: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma assured security to the president of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Raid Nongtung Blickstar Sohtun after the Assam based militant outfits of the Karbi Lungri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) and UPDS threatened him if schemes such as NREGS, SSA of Meghalaya government are implemented in twenty-four villages including Sabuda under Block II in Ri Bhoi district.

Sangma Thursday said that the state government’s assurance to provide security to the headman and the people of the area came after a delegation of People’s Movement met him.

The People’s Movement led by Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit demanded security to the people of Raid Nongtung area after Blickstar Sohtun, who is the headman of Sabuda village, complained that activists of Karbi-based militant organisations had threatened to hurt him if he fails to comply to their diktat and stop the implementation of NREGS and other developmental schemes in the inter-state border.

Blickstar told reporters, “On September 12, the members of the two militant outfits came and threatened me demanding that the implementation of the different Meghalaya government schemes in should be stopped at once.”.

Blickstar was also summoned by the militant outfits to meet them at Umlaper Thursday but he said, “I refuse to respond to this summon and decided to seeks the government help in this matter.” – By Our Reporter
