SHILLONG, SEP 30: UDP leader and home minister, Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday hit back at other coalition partners in the MDA government over the allegation related to illegal transportation of coal and described it as an attempt to divert attention from the rifts for ministerial berths within their respective parties.
“There is a rift for cabinet berths within the different political parties. Therefore, the allegation (made by them) could be an attempt to divert attention of the people from this issue related to reshuffling,” Rymbui told reporters.
He was reacting to the allegation made that the UDP is involved in facilitating illegal transportation of coal in the state.
It may be mentioned a group of ministers mainly from the PDF, BJP and HSPDP had recently demanded the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma to stop the illegal movement of coal trucks.
Rymbui also reminded that it is only the United Democratic Party (UDP) that had maintained a firm stand on the issue that there wouldn’t be reshuffling of cabinet berths among the party MLAs.
Asked, the home minister said that he has full faith in the police department that they will take necessary action against any illegal activities.
“However, we have no authority to detain coal trucks with valid documents,” he said, adding that those plying without legal documents are all illegal.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong had informed that authorities concerned have been directed to verify and take action against illegal transportation of coal in the state.
Tynsong had also stated that not all coal trucks are illegal as the government is also issuing challans for transportation of seized coal.
