Village heads opt out

SHILLONG, OCT 31: The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong (SKRS) decided not to participate in the public consultation process called by the state government on the proposed ‘Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill 2013’ to be held tomorrow.

The decision was taken following the failure of the state government to provide information on the clarification sought by the SKRS, a conglomerate of headmen from different localities of Shillong.

In a letter to political department commissioner & secretary on Thursday, SKRS general secretary RL Blah said, “We have decided not to participate at the launching of the public consultation process to elicit views on the Bill as the clarification sought by the Synjuk on the motive of initiating the said bill is yet to be provided to the headmen.”

Blah said, “It is regretted that the clarification sought by the Synjuk is not being considered as a serious matter by the government, which amounts to looking down and underestimating the authority of the dorbar shnongs.”- By Our Reporter
