Demand for doctors’ removal

SHILLONG, NOV 4: The Seng Samla Shnong Shilliang Umkhen (SSSSU) has demanded dismissal from service and ‘deregistering ’ three doctors of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) secretly carrying circumcision on thirteen minor boys which it termed as unethical and illegal.

The three doctors who allegedly carried out the circumcision on the  thirteen minor boys of Meherbaan Orphanage are Dr Habib Md. Reazul Karim (Urologist), Dr Syed Wasim Hassan (Anaesthetist) and Dr Mhd Yunus (Aneasthetist).

In a letter to union minister of health & family welfare, social justice & empowerment, ministry of home affairs and ministry of law and justice, SSSSU president JJM Wallang, “We demanded that the authorities concerned to take disciplinary action on the three doctors and deregistering them by removing their respective licenses as medical practitioners and dismissing them from service,”

The letter informed that between September 30 to October 6, the thirteen minor boys of Meherbaan Orphanage, Shillong were circumcised by the three doctors without the prior information and consent of their respective parents who reside in far flung villages of the state.

The thirteen minors were brought from the Orphanage and registered directly with the casualty department and subsequently, circumcised, it stated.

Terming the action as unethical, SSSSU said, “Using a renowned national medical institute to circumcise minors for, probably, religious purpose but without the consent of the parents concerned is highly objectionable, unethical and illegal.” The letter said it is an outright misuse and abuse of position and facilities there-in for non-medical purposes.”

Referring to the Civil Service Conduct Rules, the letter  said, “The rules prohibit proselytization and conversion by government servants and there is no doubt that the resources of the government were used in ritual circumcision at the institute.”

The SSSSU also demanded that action should be taken against the Meherbaan Orphanage which seems to run the orphanage with ulterior motive. It also demanded action against the NEIGRIHMS management for allowing the three doctors to continue besides giving them the professional shelter under the plea that a magisterial is being conducted.- By Our Reporter
